Whether it's running errands, driving three hours to a meeting, tackling off-road trails, or towing the boat to the marina, the Atlas is the perfect vehicle to meet all your needs within Volkswagen's lineup. That's not all, as the German automaker's SUV also has a hidden talent. Throughout the vehicle, you'll find several components that were developed for Audi, Porsche, and even Lamborghini models—other brands that are also part of the Volkswagen family. As a result, the Atlas delivers a driving experience that comes close to that of a luxury vehicle, even though its price remains accessible to most budgets.

The Volkswagen Atlas continues to grow in popularity year after year. The model regularly benefits from small updates that enhance its styling and capabilities. It boasts an elegant design that suits any situation.

Lineup and Pricing

For 2026, the German automaker's SUV lineup consists of four different trims, starting with the Comfortline model. However, this is far from a base model, especially with 18-inch wheels, a 12-inch touchscreen, and heated and ventilated front seats—features that typically come at an extra cost with competitors. This version starts at $54,467.50.

Next is the Peak Edition, which offers a more rugged design with all-terrain tires and enhanced interior styling, starting at $58,467.50. The Premium trim starts at $61,467.50 and adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded finishes, a 360-degree camera, and more. Finally, the Execline sits at the top of the range with a starting price of $64,467.50. A head-up display, 21-inch wheels, and massaging seats take the Atlas to another level.

Category and Competition

The Volkswagen Atlas belongs to the midsize three-row SUV segment, a category that has been gaining popularity in recent years. With its modern concept, serious styling, capabilities, and upscale feel, the German SUV holds an advantage over the competition. Its lineup may be less extensive and diverse than that of its rivals, but the Atlas shines through its simplicity, which is precisely what makes it such an appealing model.

Rivals: Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Kia Telluride, Mazda CX-90, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Grand Highlander

Design and Technology

The Volkswagen Atlas may not immediately turn heads, but it certainly stands out with its serious presence and strong sense of elegance. It features a bold front end with well-balanced proportions—one could almost imagine it wearing an Audi badge.

Inside, the Atlas offers a clean yet refined cabin. The German automaker has done an excellent job with ambient lighting and seat finishes, not to mention sound insulation, which ranks among the best in the segment. Once again, it feels as though you're behind the wheel of a luxury vehicle.

Performance

The German SUV offers only one powertrain, which is somewhat unusual for the segment. However, the combination found under the Atlas's hood is, in my opinion, perfectly suited to the vehicle. It features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive comes standard. This setup allows the Volkswagen Atlas to achieve an average fuel consumption of 12.0 L/100 km in the city and 9.2 L/100 km on the highway.

Weaknesses

An electrified powertrain would be a welcome addition. A bit more boldness wouldn't hurt either.

Strengths

The Atlas offers one of the most comfortable driving experiences in its class. It's a spacious and highly capable vehicle.

Signature Element

The Volkswagen Atlas is nothing less than a premium vehicle in a mainstream disguise.

Final Thoughts

Many vehicles claim to be designed for families, upscale outings, and outdoor adventures alike, but few truly excel in all these areas at once. As you've likely gathered, the Volkswagen Atlas is one of those rare exceptions, which, in my opinion, explains its growing success.
